Adams sharp again as NNU takes three of four

NAMPA, Idaho – If this is how good Jordan Adams is when she is banged up, what could she be like when she is healthy?

The Northwest Nazarene pitcher was getting constant work on her forearm Saturday by the training staff.

From stretching to using heating pads to using a ball to roll on her arm, the freshman star was doing everything possible to keep loose.

It didn't faze her though, as she threw a shutout scattering three hits with no walks and eight strikeouts against Simon Fraser in the opener of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader. NNU swept the Clan 3-0 and 8-2.

"I am having an issue with my forearm lately," Adams said. "We have been padding it up as much as we can. It still hurts, but I'm just going to push through and do it for my team."

Adams scoreless start Saturday lowered her league-leading ERA to 1.81 in 81 innings this season and marked her eighth consecutive start allowing one earned run or less.

"Jordan is awesome," said Shelbie Martinez, NNU's starting second baseman. "You would not expect the intensity and the go get it attitude that she has. It makes all of us play 100 percent better and put 100 percent on the field because she works her butt off."

Adams is often one of the loudest players in the dugout, screaming out words of encouragement after a hit by a teammate.

The Gig Harbor, Washington native, took a hard luck 2-0 loss on Friday and wanted to come out and set the tone Saturday in a matchup with the second-place team in the conference.

"It's awesome to come out and shut them down," she said. "It's definitely nice to get the start to the day and keep things rolling. It helped boost my confidence and hopefully boosted the confidence of the team also."

While Adams was busy putting up zeroes in the circle, Martinez was hitting the cover off the ball.

She clubbed a two-run home run in the opener and then was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the second game.

"I was just trying to stay in my zone," she said. "We have been working on that a lot in practice."

The Nighthawks (16-17 overall, 7-5 GNAC) had just five hits in the opener, but made the most of them. Abigail Otto drove in the other run on a sacrifice fly.

In the nightcap, Rae Young pitched five strong innings allowing two runs on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Cassidy Fifield delivered the big hit for the offense, blasting a three-run home run over the left field wall. She finished 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs.

Anna Williams, Martinez and Abigail Otto all added two hits, while Kylie Orr drove in two.

Taking three of four from the Clan (13-11, 9-7) is huge for an NNU team with playoff aspirations.

"We have been talking about going on a run for a long time," Martinez said. "We have the potential to go on a crazy run and it is just time that we do it."
