TURLOCK, Calif. – The Northwest Nazarene University softball team rallied past Dominican University for a 7-5 win Saturday at the Tournament of Champions.
The Nighthawks' second game was postponed because of rain.
NNU scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to rally for the victory.
In the fifth,
Cassidy Fifield and Anna Williams led off with singles and then
Kylie Orr singled in a run to tie the game at 4-4.
After Brittany Genuardi then drew a walk and to load the bases. After a force out at the plate,
Shelbie Martinez walked in a run to make it 5-4.
Kylie Orr then doubled in two runs to make it 7-4.
"We came out flat the first two innings," NNU coach
Rich Wagner said. "Once we brought some energy our defense and offense got on track."
Jackie Vargas threw five strong innings in relief of Jordan Adams. Adams gave up four runs in two innings, but only one was earned. Vargas gave up an unearned run while striking out three to get the win.
"We made some good adjustments today offensively," Wagner said. "The girls did a good job hitting with runners in scoring position."
Genuardi finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs,
Abigail Otto was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Anna Williams and
Kylie Orr each added two hits.
The Nighthawks host Simon Fraser in a pair of Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheaders Friday and Saturday in their first home games in more than a month. Friday's games start at 2 p.m. and Saturday's at noon.
