Nighthawks drop two of three at California tourney

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Northwest Nazarene University softball team opened the Tournament of Champions on Friday with one win and a pair of losses.

NNU knocked off Humboldt State 5-1 in its opener, before falling to Hawaii Hilo 6-1 and Azusa Pacific 3-0. The Nighthawks will play two more games Saturday in the tournament.

In their win, Abigail Otto blasted a three-run home run in the fourth inning, Shelbie Martinez added a run-scoring groundout and Lisa Sylvester drove in the fifth run on a fielder's choice.

Jordan Adams was sharp again in the circle, allowing one run on five hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.

It was one of three solid efforts by NNU pitching on the day, as Rae Young gave up six runs in six innings and Jackie Vargas gave up three runs in six innings.

"Jordan, Rae and Jackie pitched great today," NNU head coach Rich Wagner said. "They gave us a chance to win three games and that's exciting. The pitching staff has been working hard."

While the pitching was solid, the offense didn't click outside of the first game.

In the loss to Hawaii Hilo, NNU managed just six hits with Anna Williams recording two and driving in the lone run in the first inning.

In the loss to Azusa Pacific, the Nighthawks had seven hits and couldn't string any together to get any runs. Cassidy Fifield, Kylie Orr and Ivy Hommel were all 2-for-3. Fifield and Hommel each had doubles.

"Offensively, we didn't get things going today and that doesn't happen very often," Wagner said. "We will come back tomorrow and work hard to make the adjustments needed offensively."

NNU faces Dominican University at 10 a.m. MDT and then Academy of Art at 1:30 p.m. MDT. The Nighthawks are in town for their first home series in more than a month next weekend when they host Simon Fraser.
