Nighthawks softball earns split with Saints

LACEY, Wash. – Jordan Adams had her second consecutive dominant performance as the Northwest Nazarene University softball team split a doubleheader with Saint Martin's on Saturday.

Adams, a freshman, struck out five in seven scoreless innings as the Nighthawks (11-14 overall, 4-4 GNAC) won the opener 7-0, before falling in the nightcap 8-7.

"We played really good again today," NNU coach Rich Wagner said. "Jordan was outstanding and our offense continued to produce."

Lisa Sylvester was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a double, Abigail Otto was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Brittany Genuardi added two hits. Adams scattered five hits and walked one to pitch a second consecutive shutout against the Saints (6-9, 1-3).

In the nightcap, Cassidy Fifield hit a three-run home run, Shelbie Martinez was 3-for-4 with an RBI, Otto had two hits and two runs scored and Lily Paschal was 2-for-3. It wasn't enough, though, as the Saints won on a walkoff in the bottom of the seventh.

Jackie Vargas was the hard-luck loser in the circle, allowing three runs – two earned – in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

"Vargas did a great job in the circle," Wagner said. "We gave them a couple free bases and made a few mistakes late in the game. It's tough to win when you do that, but our offense gave us a chance and we came up just short.

"It was a good weekend."

The Nighthawks have next weekend off before heading to Turlock, Calif. during Spring Break for the Tournament of Champions on March 23 and 24.
