BURNABY, B.C. — One small miscue stole some luster from an otherwise dazzling day in Canada for the Crusaders.

An error in the bottom of seventh inning opened the door for host Simon Fraser to rally and avoid a sweep by Northwest Nazarene, which rolled at the plate and in the circle in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday.

Crusader pitcher Brooke Bonsen dominated in the opener, a 4-1 NNU victory, then Kylie Orr's two-run double had the Crusaders poised for the Game Two win before a three-run Clan rally helped the hosts steal a 4-3 victory in the bottom of the seventh.

"We played 13 great innings today, unfortunately the last inning of the day cost us a win," NNU head coach Rich Wagner said.

NNU (12-15 overall, 5-5 GNAC) came out swinging in the opener as a Lisa Sylvester RBI single in the top of the second inning gave Bonsen an early lead.

After the host Clan (7-11, 2-4) tied it in the bottom of the second, the Crusaders gave Bonsen a bit of a cushion in the top of the third.

Cassidy Fifield doubled and scored on an Orr RBI single to right, then Shelbie Martinez chased home Orr with a double and Abigail Otto added an RBI single for 4-1 lead.

Plenty for Bonsen (7-7), who struck out three and scattered five hits in the complete-game victory.

Riding that momentum, NNU jumped in front in the nightcap on a solo home run by Fifield in the first inning.

Simon Fraser pushed home a run against NNU pitcher Rylee Thomas — the hard-luck loser who scattering seven hits and struck out three — before NNU made it a 3-1 ballgame as Orr doubled home a pair of runs in the fifth inning.

"Brooke and Rylee pitched great today," Wagner said. "We continued to hit the ball, but we hit it right at defenders both games. That caused us to leave runners on base and ultimately that cost us."

As with one out and two on in the bottom of the seventh, a ground ball turned into an inning-extending error and Simon Fraser plated three runs to steal the win.

Fifield, Orr, Otto, Sylvester and Lily Paschal all collected three hits apiece in the twinbill to lead NNU, which plays another doubleheader at Simon Fraser on Saturday at 2 p.m. (Mountain Time).

"The girls are ready to get back out there Saturday," NNU's coach said.
