Furious comeback attempt falls short for Nighthawks

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Northwest Nazarene University women's basketball team put forth a furious final minute rally but fell short, dropping its first game of the season Thursday 67-64 to Biola University.

The Nighthawks (3-1) trailed 60-53 with 40 seconds left, but hit three 3-pointers in a row and a two-pointer to pull within 66-64 with seven seconds left. After Biola split a pair of free throws, NNU had one final chance but Maya Rodgers' 3-point attempt wouldn't fall.

"Give Biola credit," NNU coach Steve Steele said. "They hit big shots and we didn't. We've played four games in six days and didn't quite have the focus or the energy needed on either side of the ball."

Lexi Tubbs hit a 3-pointer with 32 seconds left and then Biola made two free throws. McKenna Walker then hit a 3 with 24 seconds left, but Biola again made two free throws. Rodgers then drained a 3-pointer before Biola made two more free throws and then Walker made a jumper to cut the lead to 66-64 with seven seconds left setting up the finish.

Walker finished with a team-high 17 points and six rebounds, while Tubbs had 14 points and seven rebounds. Raquel Jardine added 12 points and six rebounds and Danielle Jardine had nine points and seven rebounds.

NNU returns home to play Point Loma at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Sports Center.
