LACEY, Wash. — For the first time all season, the Crusaders left the field without a feeling of victory.

First-place St. Martin's pushed across a late run in the opener then used one early rally in the nightcap to sweep a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader from the Northwest Nazarene softball team, 2-1 and 5-1 on Friday.

The sweep is the first time all season NNU has left the field in GNAC play without at least one victory on the day.

"We played two good games today against a good team," NNU head softball coach Rich Wagner said. "Take away the second inning in game two and we have a complete day on the defensive side.

"We left 18 runners on base today," Wagner added. "We have to do a better job getting clutch hits, and then we have a complete day."

The Crusaders (14-22 overall, 8-10 GNAC) look to get that complete-day performance Saturday when they play another doubleheader at St. Martin's. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (mountain time).

Friday's opener proved to be a classic pitcher's duel as the Saints (29-10, 12-4) pushed home a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, but an Ali Schauer RBI single in the top of the fifth tied it for NNU.

SMU then plated the winner in the bottom of the fifth on a Lauren Diuco one-out single, providing just enough offense for the duo of Loryn Williams and Lauren Maley who teamed up to scattered six hits in the circle for the win and save, respectively.

In the nightcap, the Saints used a four-run rally in the bottom of the second inning to take what turned out to be a commanding lead, as NNU only managed a solo home run by Cassidy Fifield in the top of the fifth inning.

Orr added a hit in the late game for NNU, and finished the day 3-for-6, while Lauren Bassett had two hits in the nightcap for the Crusaders.
