LACEY, Wash. – Weather put a stop to any comeback thoughts the Crusaders had Saturday, and postponed the second half of Northwest Nazarene's scheduled doubleheader at Saint Martin's.

The Saints won the opener of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference twinbill, 8-1, in a game called after five innings because of poor field conditions as NNU (5-14 overall, 0-3 GNAC) never got its chance to rally in the late innings.

The second game of the twinbill will be made up at a time and date to be determined later this spring.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, NNU quickly answered with one swing as Justine Callen hit a solo home run in the top of the second, the GNAC-leading 20th home run this season by the Crusaders.

The Saints (7-5, 3-0) tacked on a run in the second, four in the third inning and two in the fourth for the 8-1 lead before Noelle Wright came on in relief to shut down the St. Martin's bats, recording the final two outs of the bottom of the fourth.

NNU put a runner at third in the top of the fifth but could not score, and the game was called at that point because of the poor playing condition of the field.

Along with Callen, Ashley Pesek led the NNU offense, going 2-for-2 in the shortened ballgame for the Crusaders, who now are off until March 21-22 when NNU hosts Simon Fraser.
