NAMPA, Idaho – NNU honored seniors
Chelsie Luke,
Megan Hingston,
Leslie Warwick and
Kylee Schierman before the game, then that quartet made sure it was a night to remember.
Luke and Hingston each scored game-highs of 19 points, Schierman had 10 points and nine rebounds and Warwick added nine points, six rebounds and five assists as the Crusader seniors won their final game at Northwest Nazarene, beating Western Oregon 74-57 on Saturday night at the Johnson Sports Center in Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball.
"The seniors could not have finished better than they did tonight," NNU coach
Ryan Bragdon said. "To have each of them perform at the level they did was special.
"I couldn't be prouder of them."
Hingston, who finishes her Crusaders career No. 2 all-time on the scoring list with 1,576 points, scored six of those in an 8-0 run just before halftime to erase a 22-21 Western Oregon lead, and put the Crusaders (15-11 overall, 8-10 GNAC) in front the rest of the night.
A Hingston bucket with 1 minute, 40 seconds gone in the second half pushed NNU's lead to 33-23, and the Crusaders went up as much as 48-28 on an
Ellen Ferrenburg deuce with 12:05 remaining in the game.
The Wolves made one last push to try and spoil "Senior Night," closing to 58-53 back with 5:30 left, but NNU responded with an 8-0 run capped by a Luke 3-pointer that made it 66-53 and iced the win with 3:59 still to play.
"These four seniors have been a huge contribution to this program and to the NNU community, Bragdon said. "They will be missed greatly!"
Taylor Simmons added 13 points and five steals in the win for the Crusaders, who finished their season with the victory.
