ELLENSBURG, Wash. – The Crusaders snapped a four-game skid, and did it in dramatic fashion.
Taylor Simmons drove to the basket and found teammate
Ellen Ferrenburg, whose layup as time expired gave the Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team a 66-64 Great Northwest Athletic Conference win at Central Washington on Saturday night.
"It's great to get back in the win column, it felt like an eternity," said NNU coach
Ryan Bragdon.
"We got back to taking it slow, playing as a team offensively and defensively," the Crusader coach added.
That proved true on the final play, as Bragdon said that every NNU player on the floor touched the ball for the Crusaders (11-6 overall, 4-5 GNAC) before Ferrenburg's buzzer-beater lifted them to the victory.
A win that thwarted the Wildcats (6-11, 1-8) comeback from an 11-point deficit, as an Amber Moser free throw with 25 seconds left tied the game, 64-64.
But the Crusaders managed to respond to every CWU charge, much like the final one.
"Our poise all night was very good," Bragdon said. "Every time they had a run we were able to answer it tonight, either with big stops or big buckets on the other end."
The Wildcats, who finished strong, also started strong, building a quick 8-0 lead in the game before the Crusaders answered.
A 12-1 run midway through the first half, capped by a
Cierra White 3-pointer with 4:50 until halftime, put the Crusaders in front 29-22.
The lead grew to as large as 49-38 on a Simmons layup with 13:07 remaining in the game before the Wildcats slowly chipped away, eventually tying it in the final minute.
Megan Hingston led the way for NNU with her 27
th career double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Hingston also moved into fourth on the NNU all-time scoring list, passing Alysson Kollmann (1,439) and became the all-time scoring leader for NNU since the team joined the GNAC.
Kylee Schierman added 13 points and eight rebounds,
Chelsie Luke scored 10 points and
Cierra White had eight points and four assists for the Crusaders, who next play at Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday.
Jessica VanDyke led the Wildcats with a game-high 23 points.
