NAMPA, Idaho –
Fredy Razo scored twice for Northwest Nazarene, but it was only enough to earn the Crusaders a 2-2 draw with visiting Dixie State in nonconference men's soccer Saturday on the NNU campus.
"That is a game we should have won today," NNU coach
Coe Michaelson said. "We did some great stuff in our attack and realistically should have scored about six, but we cannot continue to give away such poor goals."
Razo put NNU (0-1-2 overall) in front 10 minutes into the game, booting home a rebound after a
John DiLulo shot was stopped by goalkeeper Tyler Walters (7 saves).
The lead held up until the 24
th minute, when Alex Lawhun finished off a corner kick by Erik Shallenberger. Nadav Elimelech added an assist on the goal.
Tied 1-1 at the break, the Crusaders wasted no time re-taking the lead in the second half as Razo was fouled in the Dixie State goal box 56 seconds into the half.
Razo converted his penalty-kick chance for a 2-1 lead, but Lawhun headed home a long free kick by David Potocki in the 71
st minute, knotting the game once again.
Neither team managed another goal in the contest, which saw NNU outshoot the Red Storm (0-1-1), 21-19.
Ryan Foo made 12 saves in goal for the Crusaders in the draw.
Now, NNU looks toward league play, which begins Thursday when Western Washington visits the Crusaders' campus in Nampa, Idaho.
"Now we have conference play to look forward to and hopefully we can get some guys healthy and back on the field Thursday," Michaelson said.
Two players who won't be back for the GNAC opener are
Marshall Hartley, who broke his clavicle in two places and is likely done for the season, and Alfredo Zendejas, who is temporarily sidelined with a hamstring injury.
