Box Score BURNABY, B.C. – Simon Fraser's Jovan Blagojevic booted home the ball off a free kick in the sixth minute of play, opening the floodgates offensively for the fourth-ranked Clan, who topped visiting Northwest Nazarene 7-0 in men's Great Northwest Athletic Conference soccer late Thursday night.
"Tonight we were far from our best, but we came up against a team who I believe would have beaten anyone in the nation today," said NNU coach
Coe Michaelson.
"With the regional rankings coming out yesterday, they had a point to prove and they did it," NNU's coach added of the Clan, ranked fourth in the West Region poll behind a trio of California schools, all of which are ranked well below Simon Fraser in the Top 25 national poll.
Blagojevic finished off a free kick by teammate Robert Hyams just 5:30 into the game for Simon Fraser (12-1-1 overall, 8-1-1 GNAC), which then weathered a strong push by the Crusaders (3-5-5, 3-4-3).
Looking to even the score, NNU earned a pair of corner kicks over the next 10 minutes, but couldn't finish off either chance.
The Clan did, though, when Colin Jacques headed home a corner by Alex Rowley with 18:51 to halftime, pushing the lead to 2-0.
Ryan Dhillon's goal with 2:42 left until the break put the Clan in front 3-0, and signaled the end for the Crusaders, who were outshot 18-8 in the contest.
Dhillon added another goal in the second half, Magnus Kristensen scored twice and Gilbert Kyne finished off the scoring for Simon Fraser, which got three saves from goalkeeper Brandon Watson in the win.
Ryan Foo made four saves in goal in the loss for NNU, which looks to bounce back on Saturday when the Crusaders play at Western Washington.
"Now we need to recover and get ready for Western" Michaelson said.
