NAMPA, Idaho – Crusader coach Coe Michaelson could hardly find words to express his disappointment.
Disappointment over a 1-0 loss to visiting Saint Martin's, despite the fact that the Northwest Nazarene men's soccer team dominated play and held a man advantage for the final 19 minutes, 9 seconds of game in the two teams' Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest Saturday on the NNU campus.
"That's just an unacceptable result considering how thoroughly dominant we were," Michaelson said.
"To miss the chances we missed and to give away a goal when we're a man up, and the way we dominating, that's just inexcusable," Michaelson added.
The lone goal of the game came with the Saints shorthanded because of a red card against Dylan Gaydosh in the 71st minute.
Three seconds after the card, St. Martin's Tody Tolo booted home a loose ball following a corner kick. CJ Chu and Kaleb Strawn had assists on the goal.
Dazed a bit, the Crusaders (3-4-5 overall, 3-3-3 GNAC) – who outshot SMU 15-8 in the opening half and 23-13 total in the game – took a few minutes to get rolling again before earning a golden opportunity to tie the game.
With 9:53 remaining, Cedric Dinane was grabbed while trying to get to a loose ball in the goal box by Saints goalie Eric Owen, resulting in a penalty kick.
Fredy Razo, the leading scorer in the GNAC, took the shot and rocketed a ball off the crossbar, keeping the Crusaders at 0 on the scoreboard.
It was the last best chance, out of many on the day for NNU as Owen finished with 10 saves in the game for the Saints (4-4-1, 4-8-1).
Ryan Foo made two saves in goal for the Crusaders, who next play at Simon Fraser on Thursday.
