Refsland leads Crusaders to Split at Central Washington

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Kristin Refsland hit two home runs in the opening game of a GNAC doubleheader as the Northwest Nazarene softball team defeated Central Washington University 9-6 at Gary and Bobbi Frederick Field.  The Wildcats claimed game two 4-2.


Refsland hit the pair of round-trippers and finished with five RBI's as the Crusaders snapped a 15-game losing streak and won for the first time in Ellensburg.

The Crusaders went ahead 3-0 in the top of the first inning on the first of Refsland's two blasts, and NNU extended the lead to 7-0 with four unearned runs in the fourth inning after three CWU errors -- all with two out.

NNU added two insurance runs in the seventh on a two-run home run by Refsland, and although CWU matched the Crusaders with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, the hosts were unable to left two runners on base to end the game.


Krista Olson (3-8) earned the win for the Crusaders, while Cara Duckworth allowed just one hit in the seventh to earn her first save of the season.

In game two CWU senior Carrina Wagner hit a pair of home runs, including the game-winning two-run shot in the Wildcats half of the sixth.

NNU is now 7-36 overall and 6-28 in league play while Central Washington moved to 18-28 overall and 14-20 in GNAC action.

Duckworth, Refsland and Arielle Chao each had two hits in game one and both Duckworth and Emily Renfrow had one hit in the nightcap.

The Crusaders will close out the 2012 season on Saturday afternoon, hosting Saint Martin's University at Noon.
