NAMPA, Idaho - Seniors Erika Quint of Western Washington and
Nicole Grummons of Northwest Nazarene waged a pitching duel on Thursday afternoon at Halle Field in Nampa.
Quint (24-5) tossed a one-hit shutout to earn the Vikings a 1-0 victory, while Grummons (9-16) scattered six in allowing just one run. Quint struck-out 14 against four walks.
The Crusaders fall to 17-28 overall and 16-17 in league play while the league-leading and 20th-ranked Vikings improve to 32-12 and 20-9 in conference action.
Rain in Nampa forced the scheduled doubleheader to be reduced to just one game.
The Crusaders lone hit came on a
Cara Duckworth bunt single in the third inning and the Vikings plated the game's only run in the sixth when pinch-hitter Melissa Becker doubled into left center and then scored after a Jordan Emmil single moved her to third and Karli Baumgartner's sacrifice fly to left field brought her home.
The Crusaders will close out the 2011 season on Saturday afternoon at Montana State Billings.
