BELLINGHAM, Wash. - The Northwest Nazarene University softball team fell 6-1 and 3-2 at 23rd-ranked Western Washington University on Tuesday afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader at Viking Field.
WWU (11-0, 6-0 GNAC) was led by Erika Quint (7-0) who struck-out 11 and allowed just three NNU hits in the opener.
NNU (1-6, 0-2 GNAC) starting pitcher
Chelsey Anderson was forced to leave the game in the top of the third inning due to a broken nose suffered from a foul tip during her own at bat.
Chelsea Allsbrook came in to relieve Anderson and then drove in the Crusaders single run on a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Game two was decided in the third inning, as the Crusaders opened with two runs as
Kristin Refsland produced an RBI single and
Cara Duckworth added an unearned run. However, the Vikings would answer with three in the bottom of the frame on a two-run Meghan Carrillo single and a Krista Bickar sacrifice fly.
Both teams would be held scoreless for the remainder, however the Crusaders left the bases loaded in the fourth and stranded at least one runner in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Refsland led the Crusaders, going 4 for 4 in the nightcap, while Rachelle Berry was the only Viking with two hits against Crusader starter
Nicole Grummons (1-3). Jenna DeRosier (3-0) earned the win for WWU.
The teams will return tomorrow afternoon for the third and fourth games of the GNAC set.
