Crusaders split at Simon Fraser on Saturday

| By:
Simon Fraser (6-8, 6-8) defeated Northwest Nazarene 7-3 at Beedie Field in Burnaby in game one, but the Crusaders (10-13, 9-9) bounced back to win the second game 5-2 to halve the four-game series.

The second victory was NNU's ninth conference win of the season equaling its record for most conference wins in the 10-year history of the GNAC. The Crusaders posted a 9-15 GNAC record when the conference played a 24-game schedule in 2006.

Pinch-hitter Cortney McCallum's grand slam in the bottom of the fifth keyed a six-run fifth as Simon Fraser snapped a 1-1 tie in its first-game victory.

Center fielder Brittany Mayers also had two RBI as she tripled to tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth, then was hit by a pitch to force in a run right before McCallum's grand slam.

Simon Fraser managed just four hits in the game, but took advantage of four walks and two hit batters by NNU pitcher Nicole Grummons to score its seven runs.

The Crusaders had six hits, two of them by Sarah Varady who had a RBI single in NNU's two-run sixth inning.

In the second game, NNU built a 5-0 lead and Chelsey Anderson made it hold up blanking the Clan on two hits through the fifth.

Simon Fraser added single runs in the sixth on an error and in the seventh on a single by Mayers off of Anderson, who ended up allowing six hits. She walked three and fanned five in improving to 6-4 on the season.
