Crusaders Use Long Ball To Split With SFU

Northwest Nazarene scored all its runs on home runs in earning a split with Simon Fraser in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference twinbill at Beedie Field in Burnaby Friday.

First baseman Kelsey Haberl and catcher Brittany Ribeiro each had three hits and pitcher Cara Lukawesky tossed a five-hitter as Simon Fraser won the opener 4-1.

Northwest Nazarene, however, went deep four times in a 5-2 win in the second game. The four-game series continues Saturday with another doubleheader.

In the opener, the Clan (5-7, 5-7) built a 4-0 lead before NNU (9-12, 8-8) got on the board against Lukawesky in the seventh on a leadoff home run by shortstop Haley Hevern.

Ribeiro drove in two of SFU's runs with a double in the third and a single in the fifth. Haberl also had a RBI single in the fifth and another run scored on an error in the sixth.

In the second game, first baseman Catherine Lowery gave NNU a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run blast. The Crusaders got solo blasts in the fifth by catcher Elizabeth Beaty and in the sixth by Hevern to go up 4-0.

Simon Fraser cut that lead in half in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by pitcher Cortney McCallum, but Beaty homered again in the seventh to provide NNU pitcher Chelsey Anderson with a three-run cushion.

Anderson allowed just four hits in the game, though she did walk six. The Crusaders had nine hits, including three by Beaty and two by Lowery and second baseman Arielle Chao.
