Game Two

NAMPA, Idaho - Nicole Grummons tossed a five-hit complete game in the opener and Haley Hevern led the Crusader offense in the nightcap as the Northwest Nazarene University softball team defeated Montana State University Billings 4-1 and 8-4 on Friday afternoon in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference twinbill at Halle Field.

Grummons (3-4) surrendered just one unearned run in the complete-game effort, striking out five and walking two.  The Crusaders (4-7, 3-3) scored twice in the first inning, as both Cara Duckworth and Emily Renfrow walked and Kristin Refsland singled to load the bases.  A pair of sacrifice fly balls to left field by Chelsea Allsbrook and Haley Hevern plated both Duckworth and Renfrow, giving Grummons all the run support she needed.

NNU would add a single run in the third and sixth, as Grummons picked up an RBI for herself on a single in the third and Allsbrook would double home another run in the sixth.  Duckworth, Catherine Lowery and Becky Louber each finished with two hits for the Crusaders.

Kelly Parsons delivered a sacrifice fly ball in the second inning for MSUB's (5-10, 3-7) run and was one of five 'Jackets to record a hit.  Annaleisha Parsley (2-4) took the loss in the circle.

In game two the Crusaders opened with five runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Hevern bases-clearing double down the left field line.  Crusader starter Chelsey Anderson (1-3) earned the win and was 1 for 2 at the plate with an RBI single in the first that scored Hevern.

Refsland and Allsbrook each went 3 for 4 and Hevern was 2 for 4 as the Crusaders out-hit the 'Jackets 12 to 8.

Olivia Heidinger and Meg Harasymczuk each had two hits for MSUB.  Harasymczuk and Jenna VanEykeren each hit home runs for the Yellowjackets, with VanEykeren delivering a two-run shot in the third and Harasymczuk a solo dinger in the seventh.

MSUB starter Amanda Todd (0-3) took the loss after being lifted in the first inning.  Kasie Conder pitched 5 1/3 innings of relief, giving up three earned runs on eight hits.

The teams will complete the four-game GNAC series tomorrow at Noon.
