BURNABY, B.C. - Northwest Nazarene overcame an early 21-6 deficit to go ahead at halftime and then broke out of a 70-70 tie in the final two minutes to defeat Simon Fraser 78-70 on Saturday night in a GNAC contest in Burnaby, B.C.
After trailing by 15, the Crusaders outscored the Clan 16-5 and later used an 11-1 run to go ahead 35-31 eventually claiming a 40-36 halftime lead.
SFU (5-10, 2-8) did go back ahead twice in the second half and earned their sixth tie of the game with 2:41 left on two free throws by Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe.
But, the Clan did not score again as Northwest Nazarene ran off the final eight points, getting two free throws from Chelsie Luke with 1:55 left, a jumper by Beth Johnson with 1:08 remaining, two foul shots by Heather Adams at 0:39 and two more by Johnson at 0:24.
Johnson and Adams each had 17 points to lead NNU. Also in double figures were Megan Hingston with 11 points and Luke and Briaunna King with 10 each.
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe paced Simon Fraser with 27 points and seven rebounds.
Carla Wyman and Kia Van Laare each scored 13 and Marie-Line Pettit scored 10.
Northwest Nazarene had a big 46-29 rebounding advantage as Hingston had nine and Johnson and King each had seven.
