Wolves sweep past Crusaders in Nampa

NAMPA, Idaho - The Western Oregon University softball team swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference twinbill from the Crusaders on Friday afternoon, winning 5-1 and 11-0 at Halle Field.
 
Haley Hevern led the Crusaders, opening the NNU offense with a stand-up triple in the first inning and then scoring on Emily Renfrow's single down the left field line.

Jessie Lessard scattered eight hits and hit a three-run home run in the opener and Jessica Wood spun a two-hit shutout in the nightcap to lead Western Oregon.

The wins enabled the Wolves (30-17, 24-10) to pull within one game of first-place Central Washington (24-8), which begins a four-game series at MSU Billings Saturday.

NNU (9-36, 8-30) led the first game 1-0 on Renfrow's single until the fifth when Tierra-Lyn Cuba and Tyler Sutherland had RBI singles. Lessard then provided her own insurance in the sixth with a three-run blast.

Sutherland had three of WOU's nine hits, while Bailey Rueck and Amanda Fleer had two each.

Haley Hevern had three hits and Emily Renfrow and Kristin Refsland had two each for the Crusaders.

In the second game, Wood allowed singles to Catherine Lowery in the second and Elizabeth Beaty in the sixth in evening her record at 6-6. She didn't walk a batter and fanned four.

Sutherland had three more hits including two doubles and drove in four runs. Rueck went four-for-four including a home run and had two RBI. Lessard and Ellen Bogardus had two hits each.

The teams will return at Noon tomorrow, with the Crusaders playing their final two games of the season.
