Ashley Fix drove in a career-high five runs and Danielle Monson had three singles to set a NCAA Division II record for most consecutive games with a hit as Central Washington defeated Northwest Nazarene 9-1 in the opening game of a GNAC doubleheader at Frederick Field Saturday.
Monson extended her hitting streak to 40 games, breaking the old record of 39 she shared with Kelli Nishikda of Metro State (2009) and Jaclyn Corroto of Gannon (2006-07).
CWU (29-13, 24-8) completed the sweep of the five-game series, winning the nightcap 6-5, however Monson went 0 for 4, bringing to a halt her personnel streak which included 28 multi-hit games (19 two-hit games, 7 three-hit games and 2 four-hit games).
Monson is just one of four players, two who played Division I softball and one who played at the Division III level, to put together 40-game streaks.
In the first game, Fix doubled for two runs in the first, had a two-run single in the second, then ended the game in the fifth with another RBI single.
Meanwhile, Lauren Hadenfeld (17-4) had a no-hitter until yielding a two-out home run in the fourth to Sarah Varady. She finished with a two-hitter in the five-inning contest, fanning a third of the hitters (6 of 18) she faced.
Hadenfeld earned her second save of the season in the nightcap, allowing just one hit over the final three innings.
CWU trailed 3-0 early, but rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the third, then later snapped a 4-4 tie in the fourth on a two-run double by Samantha Petrich.
Fix had two of CWU's nine second-game hits.
NNU (9-34, 8-28) had 11 safeties, including two each by Haley Hevern, Emily Renfrow, Kristin Refsland and Catherine Lowery. Becky Louber had two of the Crusaders' four RBI.
