TURLOCK, Calif. - The Northwest Nazarene University softball team opened play at the Mizuno Tournament of Champions on Friday in Turlock, Calif., hosted by Cal State Stanislaus.
Sonoma State 13, Northwest Nazarene 2: The nationally 14th ranked Seawolves broke up a close game scoring five runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. Ashley Britton led Sonoma with three hits, including a double and home run, and drove in six runs. Janelle Arnold and Rochelle Vanyi had three hits each. Haley Hevern homered in the first inning and singled in the third to account for both of NNU's runs.
Notre Dame de Namur 4, Northwest Nazarene 1: Breanna Morales and Sammy McConvey each drove in two runs to lead Notre Dame de Namur past Northwest Nazarene. Morales doubled for two runs in the third inning and McConvey had a pinch-hit two-run double in the fourth. NNU managed just three hits off of Mary Ortega, including a solo home run by Kristin Refsland in the final inning. Ortega didn't walk a batter and fanned five.
CSU Monterey Bay 8, Northwest Nazarene 0: CSUMB scored four runs on four hits in the third inning and added four runs on two hits in the sixth as the Otters defeated the Crusaders 8-0. Shae Olds led CSUMB, going two-for-three with three RBI and Angelina Orozco was three-for-three with one RBI. Emily Renfrow and Cat Lowery each had one hit for the Crusaders as Jessica Moon improved to 4-2 for the Otters, tossing a complete-game two hitter.
The Crusaders will play twice on Saturday, facing Cal State East Bay at 4:15 p.m. and Cal State San Bernardino tomorrow night at 8:15 p.m.
