NNU Divides GNAC Twinbill at SMU

LACEY, Wash. - The Northwest Nazarene and Saint Martin's University softball teams traded shutouts on Wednesday afternoon with the Saints winning game one 11-0 and the Crusaders winning game two 3-0 as the teams concluded a four-game Great Northwest Athletic Conference series on the SMU campus.
 
Chelsey Anderson (2-6) took the loss in the opener, but Nicole Grummons (2-5) earned the win in game two, scattering seven hits in a complete-game effort for the Crusaders (4-12, 4-12 GNAC).
 
Game one was all Saint Martin's (7-14, 6-10 GNAC) as the Saints finished with 11 runs on 11 hits, while the Crusaders were held to just three safeties.  Megan Antonovich and Kristi Sigafoos each had two hits for SMU, with Joslyn Eugenio and Kirstin Davidson each plating two RBI's each.
 
NNU bounced back in game two, scoring a single run in the first when Sarah Varady sent an RBI single down the leftfield line which scored Haley Hevern, who had also singled to lead off the game.
 
The Crusaders added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh and Grummons finished the game in style, striking out the final two hitters.
 
Helping herself in the circle, Grummons also led the NNU offense, going 3-for-3, while Emily Renfrow added two hits and an RBI.  Varady added another RBI single as the Crusaders finished with eight hits. 
 
The Crusaders will now play at Western Oregon University this weekend in a four-game GNAC series on Friday and Saturday in Monmouth, Oregon.
