LOS ANGELES – Crusader Briaunna King scored a game-high 21 points but the Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team fell 78-58 against Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday afternoon at the GNAC/CCAA Challenge, hosted by Cal State Los Angeles.
The Crusaders, now 6-4 overall, were led by King both in scoring and rebounding as the sophomore pulled down seven rebounds.
Reyana Colson led Cal Poly Pomona (5-1), also scoring 21 and Megan Ford posted an impressive double-double of 12 points and 17 rebounds. Ford's rebounding effort powered CPP to a 44-25 rebounding advantage over the Crusaders.
Also in double-figures was Monica Garcia with 10 for NNU and Rosslyn Beard (14) and J.J. Judge (10) for Cal Poly.
Cal Poly Pomona handed out 12 assists, with Colson dishing a game-high six, against only 11 turnovers. Colson also grabbed a game-best five steals as CPP forced 16 NNU turnovers, eight from CPP steals.
King made two free-throws to open the scoring just 32 seconds into the game, but when Colson hit her first field goal of the game, a three-pointer, the Mustangs took the lead and never looked back.
NNU's Alla Dzhidzhiyeshvili hit a three-pointer with 9:58 to play in the first-half, cutting the CPP lead to two at 19-17, but it would be the closest NNU would come as the Mustangs responded with a 14-2 run that included eight from Beard and stretched the score to 33-19.
The Crusaders will break for Christmas and return to the hardwood on New Year's Day, hosting Western Washington University in a GNAC counter in Nampa.
