NAMPA - The Saint Martin's University softball team defeated the Crusaders 12-1 and 7-1 on Saturday afternoon in the final games of the season for both teams at Halle Field in Nampa.
The Crusaders finish the season 9-44 overall and 5-33 in GNAC play, while the Saints improved to 16-37 overall and 14-25 in conference action.
NNU's
Jael Henthorn and
Vanessa Shaw played their final games in the Red and Black, each collecting a hit on the day and were honored in a pre-game ceremony by the coaches and players.
Henthorn is a two-time all-GNAC centerfielder from Meridian, Idaho and finishes her career wtih 72 runs scored, having started in centerfield and hit leadoff for her entire four-year career.
Shaw finishes her four-year career with 40 doubles and 17 home runs and is the all-time leader at NNU in games played, walks, home runs, and doubles. Vanessa is also a two-time all-GNAC performer and holds a career .970 fielding percentage, having played both second and third base during her career.
Holly Morris had five hits and four RBI to lead the Saints.
Morris, who finished her career with 35 home runs to tie for second on the GNAC all-time list, had three hits and drove in four runs in the opener to back the six-hit pitching of Jamie Herrick. Herrick walked two and fanned one.
Morris' hits included a leadoff triple to jump-start a three-run second inning. She then had a three-run home run in the third and a RBI triple in a six-run fourth inning. She is the 14th player in GNAC history to record two triples in the same game.
SMU also got two hits each from Kristine Kaneshiro, Kacy Hernandez and Lisa Holombo. Kaneshiro, who homered in the fourth, and Holombo each had two RBI.
In the second game, Morris had two hits and scored two runs. Kaneshiro had three hits and Morgan Klemm had two to back the pitching of Brandi Klemm, who scattered seven hits. Klemm didn't walk a batter and struck out two.
Northwest Nazarene (9-44, 5-33) scored its lone run in the second on a ground out by Arielle Chao. On the day, Chelsey Anderson led NNU with three hits.
