MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon softball team defeated Northwest Nazarene 8-0 in the opening game of a GNAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Monmouth. Game two was rained out.
The Wolves (13-8, 13-8 GNAC) scored four runs in the first when Jessica Hallmark and Krysta Pennington hit back-to-back home runs, giving WOU starter Stephanie Albrecht (4-3) a quick lead to work with.
WOU added an unearned run in the third and scored one in the fourth off the bat of Bailey Rueck. Rueck's run-scoring double was one of three hits on the day for the Western Oregon third baseman.
The Wolves ended the game in the fifth when Kylee Hancock led off with a single and moved to second on an error by NNU third baseman Dana Mitchell, allowing Tyler Sutherland to reach first. Tierra-Lyn Cuba then doubled home Kylee Hancock to make it 7-0 in favor of the Wolves. Amanda Fleer walked to load the bases, allowing Hallmark to earn the game-ending RBI with a walk that plated Sutherland.
NNU will now travel to Turlock, Calif. and play in the Mizuno Tournament of Champions, hosted by CSU-Stanislaus. NNU will face five opponents in single games on April 3rd and 4th.
