LACEY, Wash. - The Northwest Nazarene softball team took two of three softball games from Saint Martin's University on Saturday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play at the Saint Martin's softball field in Lacey, Washington.
The teams began the day by completing an 8-3 Crusader win in a suspended-game from Friday afternoon.
NNU led 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth when rain forced the suspension of play on Friday. The Crusaders were able to finish the victory, snapping a 10-game losing streak, and giving Chelsey Anderson (3-7) her third win of the season in the circle.
Catherine Lowery led the Crusader offense, going three for four with two RBI, while
Vanessa Shaw added a two-run single in the second inning.
The Saints (3-17, 2-13 GNAC) bounced back to take Saturday's opening game 10-2 behind the bat of Brandi Klemm. Klemm finished two for four with five RBI, highlighted by a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the fourth.
Dana Shipley (0-3) took the loss for the Crusaders, who were led by
Haley Hevern's two for three effort at the plate.
NNU (6-17, 4-11 GNAC) trailed 0-2 into the final inning of the nightcap, but would rally as Hevern led off the seventh with her team-leading fifth home run of the season to left centerfield. Arielle Chao followed Hevern's blast with a single and pinch-runner Elizabeth Beaty moved to second on Emily Renfrow's sacrifice bunt.
With the game-tying run on second,
Jael Henthorn and Anderson would smack back-to-back doubles to plate Beaty and then Henthorn with the game-winner.
Cara Duckworth (3-7) earned the win as both Hevern and Anderson finished the game two for three.
The Crusaders will be back in action at home on Tuesday and Wednesday next week when they host Central Washington in a pair of GNAC doubleheaders at Halle Field.
