NAMPA, Idaho - The Northwest Nazarene University women's basketball team held the University of Alaska Anchorage without a field goal for 10 minutes and 37 seconds in the second half and went on to beat the nationally top-ranked Seawolves 71-48 Saturday in a key Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at the Johnson Sports Center in Nampa.
The loss will likely cost the Seawolves (24-3, 11-2 GNAC), who also lost Thursday at Seattle Pacific, the No. 1 ranking in the NCAA Division II West Regional poll. It was the first time in NNU women's basketball history that a Crusader team has defeated a nationally top-ranked team.
Northwest Nazarene (15-8, 8-4 GNAC) was clinging to a 42-40 lead with 13:41 left, but then scored 16 consecutive points as part of a 25-1 run to open up a 26-point lead at 67-41 with 3:28 remaining.
Kristin Hein led the Crusaders with 21 points and 12 rebounds, nailing all five of her three-point shots. NNU also got 17 points from Jennifer Williams and 12 from Brittney Roggenkamp. The post duo of Hein and Williams combined to shoot 15 of 25 from the floor and score 38 points.
No one was in double figures for the Seawolves, who lost their second straight game after putting together a 22-game win streak. Reserve Hanna Johansson had nine points and Kiki Taylor had eight for UAA.
The Crusaders out-rebounded the Seawolves 41-35 and held the league-leaders to 33.3-percent (16-48) shooting from the floor and a one for 18 mark from the three-point line. NNU shot 45.8-percent (27-59) from the field and hit on nine-of-14 triples.
NNU point guard Mallory Whipple finished with a game-high seven assists and six points, while Roggenkamp added to her totals with five assists and three rebounds.
Both teams played most of the game without a key player as UAA's Nicci Miller and NNU's Janee Olds collided under the UAA basket midway through the first half and after a 30-minute delay were both carried off the floor on stretchers and taken to the hospital.
The Crusaders will now travel to Saint Martin's University on Thursday and Western Oregon University one week from today.
