NAMPA, Idaho – A walk-off double by Vanessa Shaw won game two and gave the Northwest Nazarene University softball team a doubleheader sweep of Eastern Oregon University in a non-conference twinbill at Halle Field on Tuesday afternoon.
NNU took the opener 5-2 and Shaw's double handed the Crusaders a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
The Crusaders (7-29) have now won seven of their last 14 games and head into a GNAC conference series at home against Montana State Billings this weekend.
Rachel Bare (7-15) picked up both wins, pitching a complete game, eight-hit, five strikeout victory in the opener and then entered in relief of Dana Shipley in the seventh inning of game two.
Shipley had taken the Crusaders all the way to the seventh and held a 4-1 lead into the final frame, however the Mountaineers (9-15) rallied with back-to-back hits to open the inning and then touched Bare for three hits to tie the game at 4-4.
Jael Henthorn started the NNU one-out rally with a single to left center and then moved to second on a Haley Heveren walk. Shaw took the count to 2-2 and then smacked Melodee Mildenberger's pitch off the wall in left center, plating Henthorn from second for the win.
Mildenberger (5-8) took the loss in game two, with Kelly West (4-7) falling in game one.
Henthorn led the Crusaders, going three-for eight on the day, while Heveren finished two-for-five with two RBI. Shawna Juarez went one-for-three in game two, including a two-run, bases-loaded single in the fourth, giving the Crusaders a 2-1 lead at the time.
Game one saw both teams score twice in the first and the Crusaders grab the eventual game-winner in the fourth when Amanda Phillips doubled to left to lead off the inning, Bare walked and Heveren crushed a ball to right center, short-hopping the wall for a triple that scored both baserunners.
NNU would add a single tally in the fifth when Courtnee Crane singled home Shaw, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
Michelle St. John and Megan Monaghan each finished with three hits for EOU as the Mountaineers had eight hits in the opener and 10 in game two.
The conference series against MSU Billings will begin on Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.
