Crusaders fall at Central Washington

| By:
ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Central Washington University Wildcats swept a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader from the Crusaders on Saturday, defeating Northwest Nazarene 4-2 and 8-0 in Ellensburg.

CWU's Liz Wallace had three hits in each game to go six-for-six on the day. In the opener she singled to start a two-out rally in the second and eventually scored on an infield single by Kasey Druffel.

Wallace also led off the fourth with a single and then singled to snap a 2-2 tie in the fifth. Later in the inning she stayed alive long enough during a rundown between first and second to enable pinch-runner Amanda Erickson to score an insurance run.

Katriina Reime pitched the final three innings, allowing just one hit and fanning three to even her record at 4-4.

NNU had two hits, a home run by Vanessa Shaw off starter Linse Vlahovich in the second inning and a single by Shawna Juarez in the fifth.  NNU also scored once in the third after a walk, sacrifice bunt, stolen base and ensuing throwing error on the attempted steal attempt that, at the time, tied the score at 2-2.

After allowing just one hit in four innings in the opener, Vlahovich pitched four scoreless innings in the nightcap, allowing three hits and fanning seven, to earn her eighth win against 10 losses.

Wallace had three more hits, an infield RBI single in the second, a single during a three-run fourth inning and a three-run home run to end the game in the fifth on the eight-run rule.

In addition to Wallace's three hits, catcher Holly Rossman, Logan Mohr and Ashley Fix each had two safeties for the Wildcats. Jael Haenthorn had two of NNU's three safeties in game two.

With the wins, Central moves into sole possession of first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings with a 9-3 league record. The Wildcats, who are now 14-18 overall, are now one full game ahead of second-place Western Washington, which is 5-1 in conference play. Northwest Nazarene fell to 5-29 overall and 1-11 in GNAC action with Saturday's defeats.
