NAMPA, Idaho - Western Oregon University used a potent offensive attack to sweep a Great Northwest Athletic Conference doubleheader from Northwest Nazarene University on Thursday at Halle Field in Nampa. The Wolves won the opener 7-0 and took the nightcap 12-5.
Katie Fleer earned both pitching wins for the Wolves, tossing a three-hit shutout in the opener and throwing three innings of relief in game two to improve to 15-4 overall. Fleer entered game two in the fifth in relief of starter Christina Cooke and grabbed the win after the Crusaders tied the game at 5-5 in the inning. The WOU offense racked-up 32 hits on the day.
Western Oregon improves to 25-14 overall and 13-5 in GNAC play, while the Crusaders fall to 9-40 and 2-20 in league action. WOU, winners of nine-straight, are ranked sixth in this week's NCAA Division II West Region poll.
Jessica Hallmark led the Wolves at the plate, going five-for-10 with two home runs. Both home runs came in game two, a solo shot in the third and a two-run blast in the sixth, her fifth and sixth of the year. Krysta Pennington also had five hits, while Tyler Sutherland, Kristin Maglasang and Jamie Becker each finished with four.
The Crusaders were led by
Jael Henthorn's four-for-six effort at the plate with
Haley Hevern,
Kate Free and
Vanessa Shaw each picking up RBI extra-base hits in game two. Hevern's RBI triple and Free and Shaw's back-to-back RBI doubles all came in the first inning of game two.
The Crusaders will face Saint Martin's University tomorrow at 3 p.m. in a single game and then wrap up the 2008 season on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Saints at noon.
