Wolves throw blanks at Crusaders

| By:
MONMOUTH, Ore.- Western Oregon's Katie Fleer and Christina Cooke took turns tossing a pair of one-hitters as the Wolves swept Northwest Nazarene 2-0 and 8-0 to claim a pair of conference softball wins on Thursday afternoon at the WOU Softball Field.

The No. 8 nationally ranked Wolves improved to 10-3 overall with the victories, and they moved to 3-1 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.  Northwest Nazarene remained winless at 0-17 and they are now 0-4 in the GNAC.

Fleer was two outs away from chucking a no-hitter before NNU's Haley Hevern laced a single to left field.  The 6-foot-2 right-hander fanned 13 Crusader batters and did not walk anyone in improving to 5-0 on the season.

In the second game, Cooke didn't give up a hit until the fourth inning when Katie Free smacked a single to left field.  The senior fanned seven batters in the mercy-rule five inning contest, and she did not walk a batter.  Meanwhile, the Wolves had plenty of offense, scoring three runs in the second inning, two more in the third and the final three to end the game in the bottom of the fifth.

The Crusaders will play a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday against Humboldt State University at 11 a.m., hosted by Western Oregon.
