POMONA – Cal Poly Pomona held Northwest Nazarene without a field goal inside the final 6:26 on Saturday afternoon and went on to earn a 56-53 victory over the visiting Crusaders in the final game of the CCAA/GNAC Classic, held at Kellogg Gym.

The victory was CPP's fourth straight as it moved above the .500 level for the first time this season. The Broncos are now 6-5 overall and Northwest Nazarene fell to 6-4.

Both teams struggled from the floor, but Cal Poly Pomona got the upper-hand late. After a pair of free throws from NNU's Mallory Whipple tied the game at 51-51 with 2:43 remaining, the Broncos' Stephisha Walton scored her first field goal of the game after missing her first 10 shots. She also drew the foul and converted the 3-point play as CPP led 54-51 with 2:29 left.

The Crusaders' Brittney Roggenkamp hit the second of a two-shot foul to cut the lead to 54-52 at the 1:25 mark. But CPP senior Ally Smith (Kennewick, Wash.) broke free and scored on a layup with 59 seconds left and the Broncos led 56-52.

Mallory Whipple hit the second of a two-shot foul to again draw the Crusaders within a point with 34 seconds left. After a missed layup from Smith, NNU had a shot to tie the game. But Janee Olds' 3-point effort with a second remaining was short.

Tournament MVP Reyana Colson (Compton) led the Broncos with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the tourney. Smith finished with 13 points and all-tournament choice Megan Ford (Fr., Newhall) scored 11 points with 5 rebounds.

The Broncos shot 33.9 percent from the floor after opening with a 25.8 percent effort (8-of-31) in the first half. But they forced 23 NNU turnovers and the Crusaders fired just 37.8 percent from the field (17-of-45).

CPP dominated off the glass, owning a 41-33 advantage with 14 offensive rebounds.

NNU was led by Lindsay Brady, who scored 15 points. She and teammate Brittney Roggenkamp (11 points) were named to the all-tournament team along with Western Oregon's Katie Torland.
