NAMPA- Northwest Nazarene's Ashley Puga broke her own school record and posted an NCAA Division II national qualifying time of 2:13.67 in the 800-meters on Saturday as the Crusaders broke four school records competing at the Bronco Indoor Invitational on the Jackson's Track at the Idaho Sports Center in Nampa.
Crusader thrower Zach Barclay captured two school records and now owns the NNU mark in both the indoor shot put and weight throw. Barclay finished fifth in the weight throw with a toss of 50-3 ½ and fourth in the shot put with a put of 46 feet even.
On Friday night, Ashley Wornell scored 3,139 points in the Pentathlon competition, breaking the NNU record by 37 points, as she finished second in the Combined Events competition.
"In the 800 I just wanted to go out and do the best I could. I did the mile before (the 800m) last week so it was a bit different today. There were a lot of great racers today and things turned out well. It was nice getting the PR and I feel lucky that I was able to get the school record, as well as the national provisional number," commented Puga following her leg of the women's 4 x 400-meter relay.
Puga's 800-meter time was a personal record, school record, national provisional qualifier time, and is the season-best GNAC time and fifth best GNAC all-time mark in the 800. Puga is the first woman nationally this season to hit the 2:13 mark.
"Ashley gave a great individual effort today and I am very pleased with her performance. Nobody has hit that 2:13 mark yet, so it was nice for Ashley to get that," commented NNU assistant coach Ben Gall.
"Coach Spatz has been awesome with us, and he has been pushing us," commented Barclay regarding the NNU throwers. "What is really great is how Grant (Miller) and I have been pushing each other in the shot. It is always good, the competition that we have going right now." Miller also placed in the shot put, as he finished fifth, directing behind Barclay with a throw of 44-5 ½ .
The men's 3,000-meters was also a good event for NNU as Kevin Lambert finished third overall. "Well, last week was kind of an easier week, I ran more relaxed. Today I went out running more seriously today and felt real good" commented Lambert on his performance in the 3000-meters over the last two weeks.
Greg Hamm finished ninth in the 200-meters, but his time is a GNAC-best 23.04. Andy Peters followed last week's performance nicely as he finished second in the mile with a time of 4:23.24 and 5th in the 800m with a time of 2:04.94.
Emily Petersen provided the main jump highlight for the Crusaders as she placed second in the high jump at 5-4 ¼ and the NNU women's 4x400 relay team took over the GNAC lead with a time of 4:05.98.
