NNU women earn third consecutive nationals berth

| By:
NAMPA, Idaho – The Northwest Nazarene women's basketball team is going dancing. In Hawaii, no less.

The Nighthawks earned their third consecutive NCAA Division II National Tournament berth Sunday during the selection show.

NNU (22-7) is the No.6 seed and will face the No. 3 seeded UC San Diego Tritons on Friday at Hawaii Pacific in Honolulu.

NNU, which finished second during the regular season in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, lost in the semifinals of the conference tournament to Western Washington, ending a seven-game winning streak.

In that loss, NNU starter Erin Jenkins hurt her knee in the first four minutes and missed the rest of the game. Her status for the national tournament is up in the air.

The Nighthawks won their first-round game last season, their first national tournament win since 2003.

Senior Avery Albrecht was named the GNAC Player of the Year last week and is averaging 15.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Fellow senior Marina Valles was named to the all-GNAC second team and is averaging 14.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.2 steals.

Hawaii Pacific is the top seed and will play No. 8 Cal Poly Pomona, Alaska Anchorage is the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 Western Washington and Cal State San Marcos is the No. 4 seed and will face No. 5 Azusa Pacific.
