SPOKANE, Wash. – Seattle Pacific has made seven consecutive NCAA Division II women's soccer playoff appearances, and there doesn't appear to be any reason the six-time GNAC champions (2002-05, 2008 & 2009) won't make it eight this fall.
The Falcons return eight starters including a league-best four first-team all-stars off last year's team that edged Western Washington by one point for the conference title.
Chuck Sekyra, who has guided his teams to a phenomenal 134-14-12 record over the past seven seasons is optimistic the Falcons will once again be playing well into November.
“Our kids came in (to camp) very fit,” Sekyra said. “The energy at practice and level of play has been outstanding. This looks like a very confident, fit, high-playing team, so we're real excited.”
Seattle Pacific won the national title in 2008 and was eliminated on penalty kicks in last year's regionals, yet they are winless (0-2-2) in their last four regular-season outings against Western Washington.
So they should once again get one of their stiffest challenges from WWU though the Vikings did graduate goalkeeper Kylie Broadbent who had eight shutouts and Kelly Irving who tied a school-record with 26 career assists.
Up-and-coming Saint Martin's may be the “best of the rest” though the addition of two-time NAIA champion Simon Fraser definitely adds another dimension to the conference race.
The Clan is playing a full conference schedule though it will still compete in the NAIA playoffs for at least another year before becoming eligible for the NCAA post-season.
Seattle Pacific garnered six of the eight first-place votes in the GNAC Coaches pre-season poll in outpointing Western Washington 62-56. Saint Martin's was a distant third with 43 points.
The Vikings and Central Washington, which tied Simon Fraser for fourth in the poll with 34 points, each were listed on one ballot as the No. 1 team.
While Seattle Pacific has an abundance of talent, its losses were not insignificant. GNAC scoring champion Jocelyn Charette (15 goals, 7 assists), all-region midfielder Janae Goday and freshman honorable mention all-league defender Taylor Lundquist were among the losses.
Lundquist played a key role last season on a defense that enabled goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson to set a conference record by not allowing a goal for 1,012 minutes and 12 seconds, a streak that extended back to SPU's 2008 title run.
Meanwhile, Charette had eight game-winning goals and Goday had five assists.
Charette is the only player not returning in the GNAC who was among the Top 10 scorers in the conference.
SPU midfielder Kelsey Jenkins (5-8, Jr., Kent, WA – Kentwood) finished 10th in scoring with 18 points (5 goals, 8 assists) in earning National Soccer Coaches Association third team All-American honors.
Megan Lindsay (5-7, So., Spokane, WA – Gonzaga Prep), meanwhile, ended up ninth based on points per game. She had 16 points (6 goals, 4 assists) in 18 contests.
Lindsay, however, is not one of SPU's five returning all-stars. Earning first team honors in addition to Jenkins were Dickinson (5-8, Sr., Vancouver, WA – Skyview), forward Amanda Johnson (5-7, Sr., Duvall, WA – Cedarcrest) and defender Taylor Sawyer (5-5, So., Gig Harbor, WA – North Mason).
Sawyer was also voted to the NSCAA first-team All-American team. When she was in the lineup, SPU's defense was almost impenetrable. Five of the 11 goals the Falcons surrendered came in two of the games Sawyer missed to injuries.
Johnson was a force up front, scoring three goals and contributing five assists, while Dickinson recorded the league's best goals against average (0.57) and the best save percentage (8.62) in earning third team All-American accolades. Her career 0.49 GAA ranks second in conference history.
Another returning all-star is defender Savanna Hanson (5-8, Jr., Centennial, CO - Littleton), who also made her mark on offense scoring three goals and earning two assists. She was a second team pick.
Two other defenders also return from last year's starting eleven, Janie Wurth (5-7, Jr., 0-3-3, La Mirada, CA – Troy) and Andrea Chan (5-4, So., 1-3-5, Vancouver, WA – Central Catholic).
Among six other letter winners is forward Brandi Hamre (5-7, Jr., Bremerton, WA – Central Catholic), who ranked fourth on the team in scoring (4 goals, 6 assists) in a part-time starting role.
Sekyra also added two experienced four-year players to his roster. Forward Kendall Thoreson (5-5, So., Seattle, WA) transferred from Northwestern where she played in 18 games and had one goal.
Midfielder Mackenzie Harrison (5-6, Jr., Seattle, WA) participated in 13 games at Division III Pomona-Pitzer where she had three goals and one assist.
Western Washington actually has the fewest number of returning starters among the conference's eight teams with five.
Back for the Vikings are forward Molly Shannon (5-10, Sr., Bellingham, WA), midfielder Emily Franklin (5-4, Sr., Sammamish, WA – Skyline) and defenders Alicia Patten (5-9, Jr., Seattle, WA – Holy Names), Keller Haden (5-9, Sr., Brush Prairie, WA - Hockinson) and Emily Warman (6-0, Jr., Sedro-Woolley, WA).
Patten was a first team all-star and has been a starter virtually from the day she arrived on campus. “Alicia has had two great seasons,” WWU coach Travis Connell (82-46-12), who has led his team to two post-season appearances in the past four seasons, said.
Haden started a dozen games last season, while Warman made 17 starts on a defense that allowed just 21 goals in 19 games and lost just one conference game.
Shannon led the Vikings in scoring and ranked eighth in the GNAC with 17 points (7 goals, 3 assists) in earning second team all-conference honors.
Frankland, meanwhile, tallied six goals and had 13 points and was an honorable mention pick.
Shannon will team up with Claire Morgan (5-7, Sr., Bellingham, WA) to give WWU a dynamic 1-2 attack up front. Morgan started just five games last season, but still was an honorable mention pick with two goals and two assists.
Her career credentials are most impressive. She has 17 career goals and 19 assists and was voted to the GNAC first team in both her freshman and sophomore seasons.
Shannon and Morgan have played together for years in college, high school and youth leagues.
“They're at their best when they play together,” Connell, who has moved WWU into a 4-4-2 alignment to take advantage of their unique connection, said. “They know each others tendencies, the runs they like to make. They can be a dynamic pair.”
Five other letter winners are also back including midfielder Justina MacDowell (5-5, Jr., Bellevue, WA – Sammamish), who had two goals and two assists last season.
MacDowell will join with Washington State transfer Megan Chapin (5-5, Jr., Seattle, WA – Garfield), who played in 36 games in two seasons at WSU, to form a speedy pair of outside midfielders.
“Justina had a great off-season,” Connell said. “She has the pace and ability facing goal to be a real attacking force. And Megan might be even faster.”
In the center midfield is returnee Katie Griffith (5-4, Jr., Burlington, WA – Burlington-Edison), who made seven starts and Chico State transfer Jackie Thomas (5-5, Jr., Seattle, WA) who played in 39 games over two seasons for the Wildcats.
In goal, Jamie Arthurs (5-8, So., Richland, WA) is the likely replacement for Broadbent, who ranks eighth in GNAC history with 16 career shutouts. Arthurs made four starts last season, recording one shutout.
Saint Martin's, coming off the first winning season in its three-year history, hopes to continue its steady progress under fourth-year coach Rob Walker (20-35-3, 3 years).
The Saints will be led by two-time first-team all-league forward Jill Webb, who ranks 15th in career scoring in GNAC history with 66 points.
Webb (5-6, Sr., Puyallup, WA – Emerald Ridge) tied for second in the conference in scoring last season with 28 points (11 goals, 6 assists) after winning the conference scoring title two years ago with 38 points (15 goals, 8 assists).
Webb is one of nine returning starters and five all-stars back among 16 letter winners for Walker.
Also available are midfielders Kayci Donatelli (5-7, Sr., Burien, WA - Highline) and Jenny Baker (5-6, Sr., Eatonville, WA), defender Cayla Dixon (5-4, Sr., Federal Way, WA) and goalkeeper Ashley Engel (5-8, Jr., Burien, WA - Kennedy).
Donatelli was SMU's second-leading scorer a year ago with 15 points (6 goals, 3 assists) to earn first team all-league honors, while Baker ranked third with nine points (4 goals, one assist) and was an honorable mention selection.
Dixon was a second team selection and Engel was an honorable mention pick after ranking third in the GNAC in GAA (1.09) and second in save percentage (.804).
Also back from the Saints' starting unit are midfielder Julianna Sackeyfio (5-9, Sr., 1-3-5, Seattle, WA - Ingraham) and three defenders – Caley Wiseman (5-0, So., 1-2-4, University Place, WA - Curtis), Shannon White (5-7, Sr., 1-2-4, Bremerton, WA - Olympic) and Amber Pratt (5-3, Sr., Lake Stevens, WA).
Central Washington returns four all-stars among its seven starters, but is one of three teams – along with WWU and Simon Fraser - who will have new net minders.
C.J. Balstad (5-7, So., Port Orchard, WA – South Kitsap), who played two games in 2007 but none since, and freshman Kori Butterfield (5-7, Duvall – Cedercrest) are battling for the starting goalkeeper role.
Returning up front for head coach Michael Farrand (69-114-16, 10 years) are a pair of second-team all-star forwards – Kaycie Hutchins (5-7, Sr., Port Orchard, WA – Bellarmine Prep) and Serena Tomaso (5-4, Jr., Enumclaw, WA).
Hutchins ranked seventh in the GNAC in scoring with 18 points and was one of five players, including Jenkins and Montana State Billings' Jaucelyn Richter to tie for the conference lead with eight assists.
Hutchins set a conference single-game record with five assists in an 8-0 win over Northwest University. Tomaso had 14 points, scoring five goals and assisting on four others.
Midfielder Ellie Eckroth (5-2, Sr., 1-0-2, Auburn, WA – Auburn Mountainview) and defender Hillary Franks (5-9, Jr., Yakima, WA – West Valley), meanwhile, were honorable mention selections.
Also back from last year's starting lineup are forward Brittany Franks (5-7, Jr., 3-1-7, Yakima, WA – West Valley), midfielder Estelle Hage (5-3, So., 0-1-1, Seattle, WA – Mount Rainier) and defender Amanda Biggs (5-5, Sr., 0-2-2, Carnation, WA - Cedarcrest).
Simon Fraser will begin its first season in the GNAC under the direction of newly elected NAIA Hall-of-Fame coach Shelley Howieson.
In 22 seasons, Howieson has a record of 259-111-41 and has taken her team to the NAIA national championship game four times, winning titles in 1996 and 2000 and finishing second in 1997 and 1998.
The Clan lost in the opening round of the regionals last season and are coming off a 7-7-3 record. Six starters are among nine returnees off of that squad.
Three all-stars are among that group including first-team NAIA Independent picks Lauren Lachlan and Aly Benes, who played in the midfield and at forward, respectively.
Lachlan (5-6, Sr., Port Moody, BC) scored one goal and had two assists last season, while Benes had a goal and an assist. Midfielder Stephanie Pagliaro (5-4, Sr., Burnaby, BC) had two assists and was a second team selection.
Also returning from last year's starting lineup are midfielder Caitlyn Young (5-5, Sr., 1-2-4, Surrey, BC) and defenders Ari Adams (5-6, Sr., 1-1-3, Maple Ridge, BC) and Jessica Fleming (5-8, Sr., Coquitlam, BC).
Among last year's reserves returnees include midfielders April Coffin (5-5, Jr., 2-3-7, Surrey, BC), Natalie Fabbro (5-10, Jr., 1-2-4, Burnaby, BC) and Anna Brancati (M, 5-6, Jr., Coquitlam, BC).
SFU's recruiting class for its first season in the GNAC includes only one transfer – goalkeeper Amelia Ng (5-7, So., Richmond, BC) from Kwantlen College.
Montana State Billings returns a league-best 10 starters, including three players who ranked in the top six in scoring.
Richter (5-5, So., Billings, MT) was voted the GNAC Freshman-of-the-Year. The first-team all-star forward tied Webb for second place in scoring with 28 points, including 10 goals and eight assists.
Midfielder Kari Foreman (5-5, Sr., Lakewood, CO – Bear Creek) ranked fourth with 21 points (9 goals, 3 assists) and defender Jennifer Larsen (5-4, So., Mesa, AZ – Mountain View) tied for fifth with 19 points (8 goals, 3 assists). Both earned honorable mention all-league accolades.
Defender Samantha Boehm (5-7, Sr., 0-1-1, Wilsonville, OR) was also an honorable mention selection.
In addition to the four all-stars, six other players return from MSUB's 2009 starting lineup for ninth-year head coach Don Trentham (72-69-9).
Back in the midfield are Andrea Baytaluke (5-6, So., 1-3-5, Calgary, AB – Central Memorial), Kristen Kastelic (5-9, So., 1-0-2, Phoenix, AZ – Desert Vista) and Carly Valentine (5-3, Sr., 3-4-10, Vancouver, WA - Skyview).
Returning in the backfield to play in front of goalkeeper Jordan Fenwick (5-6, Sr., 1.78 GAA, 3 shutouts, Boise, ID) are Lauren Anderson (5-4, Sr., 0-2-2, Ridgefield, WA) and Courtney Harvey (5-4, So., 0-1-1, Billings, MT).
Trentham also added two all-region junior college players in the midfield – Amanda Brusic (5-5, Jr., Yakima, WA) from Walla Walla CC and Tyshae Davis (5-5, Jr., Idaho Falls, ID) from Treasure Valley CC.
Western Oregon has similar all-star numbers to MSUB, also returning one first team selection and three honorable mention picks from the 2009 season.
Rod Fretz (106-142-18, 14 years) also has a league-best 20 returning letter winners available hoping to improve on last year's sixth place finish.
Forward Rachelle Kliewer (5-8, Sr., Tualatin, OR - Clackamas) tied Larsen for fifth in scoring last year with 19 points (8 goals, 3 assists) in earning first team honors. She was also voted the GNAC Newcomer-of-the-Year.
Named to the honorable mention list were midfielders Chelsy Okuma (5-2, So., 2-0-4, Honolulu, HI - Kaiser) and Naomi Shimabuku (5-3, Sr., 0-1-1m Aiea, HT - Moanalua) and goalkeeper Brittney Rigtrup (5-7, Sr., 1.80 GAA, 2 shutouts, Renton, WA - Hazen).
Five other returnees were starters – forward Marina Austin (5-6, So., Olympia, WA), midfielder Kym Witmer (5-3, So., 1-2-4, Newburg, OR), defenders Jill Petersen (5-5, Sr., 1-0-2, Clackamas, OR) and Monique Thees (5-8, Jr., Camano Island, WA - Stanwood) and goalkeeper Kelsie Blachly (5-7, Sr., 2.33 GAA, Gresham, OR) who split the time in the net almost evenly with Rigtrup.
Northwest Nazarene finished 1-10-1 in the conference last season and returns nine starters, including five players who received all-star recognition.
Forward Stacey Beckman (5-8, Sr., Olympia, WA) and defender Jessie Cahill (5-5, Jr., Henderson, NV – Green River) were second team selections for head coach Jamie Lindvall (34-90-10, 7 years). Beckman was the team's leading scorer with 11 points (5 goals, 1 assist).
Defender Marie Smith (5-9, Sr., Bellingham, WA - Sehome), who had four goals and one assist, and Liz Gross (5-10, Sr., Everett, WA - Cascade) and goalkeeper Tanya Zickefoose (5-6, So., 2.49 GAA, 1 shutout, Edmonds, WA - Meadowdale) all earned honorable mention honors.
Other returning starters include forward Lacey Thompson (5-7, Sr., Snohomish, WA - Monroe), midfielders Sarah Staropoli (5-2, So., 3-2-8, Beaverton, OR – Westside Christian) and McKenzie Bailey (5-6, Sr., 2-2-6, Meridian, ID – Mountain View) and defender Kendra Courcy (5-6, Sr., 3-1-7, Selah, WA).
